WASHINGTON — Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene said on Friday that she will be leaving Congress in January. Greene was a devoted admirer of President Donald Trump before turning against him and facing political reprisals if she ran for reelection.

In an online video that lasted over ten minutes, Greene gave an explanation of her choice, stating that she didn't want her congressional district "to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the president we all fought for."

Greene's retirement came after a public spat with Trump in recent months, during which the congresswoman chastised him for his positions on Jeffrey Epstein papers, foreign policy, and health care.

When she stood for reelection the next year, Trump called her a "traitor" and "wacky" and threatened to support a rival.

She stated that January 5, 2026, would be her last day.

A message requesting response on Friday night was not immediately answered by the White House.

Trump told ABC News over the phone on Friday night that Greene's resignation is "great news for the country." He claimed he wished Greene well but had no plans to talk to her.

Greene embraced parts of Trump's unreserved political style and was one of the most outspoken and public proponents of his Make America Great Again agenda.

His hold on conservatives, especially his most ardent constituency, was noticeably weakened by her breakup with him. However, she followed in the footsteps of many of the more moderate establishment Republicans who went against Trump by stepping down in the face of his criticism.

"My life is filled with happiness, and my true convictions remain unchanged, because my self-worth is not defined by a man, but instead by God," the congresswoman stated as she recorded the video announcing her resignation while seated in her living room with a cross necklace, a Christmas tree, and a peace lily plant behind her.
